Spring Term 1

Topic- Off on a UK adventure.

Science- Animals

During Literacy this half term we will be cross-curricular writing and finding features of a non-fiction text. We will be learning about animals in science lessons and creating a non-fiction text about them. We will be using the internet to find things out about animals and completing comprehension activities. This will help the children to learn more about animals and support them in their science lessons.

We will be looking at place value of numbers between 0-50 and continuing to work on addition and subtraction within 20 using number lines to support.

Topic- Geography

We will be  'Off on a UK adventure!'

In Geography we will be looking at the 4 countries of the UK and locating them on a map. We will be looking in more detail at human and physical geography in our region. We will be using google maps to support our map work and geography learning.

We will be creating a piece of art work based on the artist L.S Lowry ‘Our Town’ and will create a famous landmark in the UK during DT.

The children will read at least once a week on their own with an adult. We will be doing some small guided reading groups when the children are ready.

Year 1 are encouraged to change their home reading books on a Monday and a Friday . We have a basket with different coloured books in and the children can choose a new book once they have read it at least 3 times. The 1st time they will be getting to know the book. The 2nd time they will be reading the book with more clarity and beginning to understand it. The 3rd time we encourage parents to use the guided reading questions provided to ask the children about the story as this helps when we come to our half termly assertive mentoring tests :) It is important that the child can not only read the book but also understand what they are reading. We will re-test the children at the end of this half term and this will determine whether your child will change a book band / colour :)

In science this half term we are learning about animals. We will be grouping animals and looking at their structures. We will find out about carnivores, herbivores and omnivores.
