Welcome to 1W!

Miss Boyle is our teaching assistant in 1W.

Autumn Term 1

'Our Local Area!'

English

In Autumn term 1 , our topic is ‘Our Local Area’’. We will be looking at the traditional story tale: ‘The Three Little Pigs’’.  We will be learning this story using our Talk For Writing strategies. Once we know the story really well we will then start to sequence, putting the story in the correct order. Later in the half term we will start retelling the story using some simple sentences.

We will also be learning about upper and lower case letters and how to unjumble some mixed up sentences!

We will have phonics everyday and will read with an adult 1:1 at least once a week.

Maths

In Maths, we will be starting the term by looking at numbers to 10.  We will be looking at ways to represent these numbers and be concentrating on how to write these numerals.

We will then move on to ordering numbers from largest to smallest and smallest to largest. Towards the end of the half term we will be comparing amounts by using some special symbols known as inequality symbols.

We will do lots of practical maths to help us learn new maths ideas and will be encouraged to use new maths vocabulary that we have been learning to explain how we solve problems.

We always strive to be super independent learners!

Topic

Our topic in Autumn 1 is ‘Our Local Area.’’. We will be looking at the area around our school as well as the whole of Ellesmere Port. There will be a short walk around the local area so we can create our own maps and use symbols to show where houses, shops and parks are. We will also learn new geographical vocabulary such as human and physical features of our local area.

Reading

The children will read at least once a week on their own with an adult. We will be doing some small guided reading groups when the children are ready.

Year 1 are encouraged to change their home reading books on a Monday and a Friday . We have a basket with different coloured books in and the children can choose a new book once they have read it at least 3 times. The 1st time they will be getting to know the book. The 2nd time they will be reading the book with more clarity and beginning to understand it. The 3rd time we encourage parents to use the guided reading questions provided to ask the children about the story as this helps when we come to our half termly assertive mentoring tests :) It is important that the child can not only read the book but also understand what they are reading. We will re-test the children at the end of this half term and this will determine whether your child will change a book band / colour :)

PE Days

On Tuesday and Fridays we have P.E.,  so please ensure your child has their full P.E. kit in school, (tshirt, shorts and pumps) all earrings must be removed or covered up. If your child needs a new P.E. kit they are available to buy at the school office.

We look forward to each and everyday in Year 1 and hope that all of the children enjoy their time with us as we continue to achieve excellence.

We are on Twitter and the children will be tweeting throughout the day!

Don't forget to follow us.

Thank you

Mrs Williams & Miss Boyle
