Spring Term
Our topic this term is:

Vile Victorians!

This half-term the children will continue to develop their writing skills by exploring a Victorian heroine, Florence Nightingale. We will use artefacts and a range of sources to make predictions and research facts to write a non-chronological report. The children will be encouraged to use a range of punctuation in their sentences, and to make their writing more interesting using adjectives and conjunctions.

Follow our class twitter page to find out more about our big book reveal later this half-term!

We have a 30 minute daily phonics lesson to practise reading and writing our sounds. Each week we will be introduced to a new spelling pattern that we will be encouraged to use in our writing and reading.

We will begin this half-term by building on our previous learning from Year 1 through exploring 2-D and 3-D shapes. We will understand that 2-D shapes are flat shapes, and we will recognise 2-D shapes in different orientations and proportions. We will learn lots of new vocabulary to describe properties of 2-D and 3-D shapes. Later this half-term we will explore fractions. The children will understand terms including whole, halves and quarters. We will learn through practical based lessons and hands on experience.

We will continue to practise daily our 2, 3, 5 and 10 times table, so remember to keep practising them at home too!

The children will continue to develop their mental math strategies through our arithmetic academy lessons each week.

We have access to Mathletics, which allows the children to practise their number skills at home. The children's login details can be found on the first page of their reading record.

Our topic this term is Vile Victorians! We will be looking at the history of Queen Victoria and we will add important dates to create Victorian Timeline. We will explore how Victorian Classroom were different and compare and contrast it to life at William Stockton. Look at our 'Sticky Knowledge Mats' to find out our key topic words.

In Design and Technology will we explore the work of William Morris. We will use his work as inspiration to design and create our own pattern.

In the second half of the term we will explore Female heroines from the Victorian era. We will explore the life of Florence Nightingale using artefacts and a range of sources to research her life.

The children are expected to read at home on a daily basis. Please ask your child questions about what they have read in order to develop their comprehension skills. Please return your child's reading book and reading record on a Monday.
Children's books will be changed on a

Each child has access to Phonics Bug Club. This interactive site allows children to practise their phonics based reading skills. Your child's login can be found on the first page of their reading record.
