Liverpool at War

Our topic for Autumn 1 is Liverpool at War. During this topic, we will develop our historical enquiry skills. We will be introduced to Liverpool during both WW1 and WW2, looking at how Liverpool has changed over time.

In Years 5 and 6, we will be continuing to focus on the following things:

  • Developing our comprehension skills.
  • Improving our vocabulary.
  • Understanding what we read by:
    • checking that the book makes sense, discussing our understanding and exploring the meaning of words in context
    • asking questions to improve our understanding
    • drawing inferences such as inferring characters’ feelings, thoughts and motives from their actions, and justifying inferences with evidence
    • predicting what might happen from details stated and implied
    • summarising the main ideas drawn from more than 1 paragraph, identifying key details that support the main ideas
    • identifying how language, structure and presentation contribute to meaning
    • discuss and evaluate how authors use language, including figurative language, considering the impact on the reader
    • distinguish between statements of fact and opinion
    • retrieve, record and present information from non-fiction
    • participate in discussions about books that are read to them and those they can read for themselves, building on their own and others’ ideas and challenging views courteously
  • Continuing to develop our love of reading. 6F LOVE reading!
  • Being introduced to and inspired by different authors. We will be continuing to at the works of: Emma Carroll - Letters from the Lighthouse and Shirley Hughes - Whistling in the Dark.
  • Planning, drafting, writing, editing, evaluating and proof-reading our work.
  • Writing newspaper reports, biographies, blogs and alternative chapters/ endings.

Spellings - Below are the spelling words for Years 3,4, 5 and 6. Children need to be working on these at home.

  • In Maths we will be continuing to look at the 4 mathematical operations and mathematical reasoning. We will be focussing on developing our fluency, problem-solving and reasoning using APE. (Answer it, Prove it, Explain it!) We will also be working on …time, fractions, decimals, percentages, ratio and proportion, measure, statistics and shape.

It would be really helpful if you could:

  • Practise all of the times tables.
  • Let your child explain what they have done in Maths that day.
  • Explore topics assigned on Mathletics.

Science light and optics flashcards on Tinycards

This term we will be exploring Light.

We will recognise that light appears to travel in straight lines and use the idea that light travels in straight lines to explain that objects are seen because they give out or reflect light into the eye. We will be able to explain that we see things because light travels from light sources to our eyes or from light sources to objects and then to our eyes. We will use the idea that light travels in straight lines to explain why shadows have the same shape as the objects that cast them.

We will explore the way that light behaves, including light sources, reflection and shadows. We will talk about what happens and make predictions.

We will work scientifically by investigainge the relationship between light sources, objects and shadows by using shadow puppets

Topic – Liverpool at War

This topic will allow us to develop our historical enquiry skills. We will place key events during WW1 and WW2 in a chronological framework. We will complete a local study on Liverpool during both WW! and WW2, looking at the impact this had on Liverpool. We will be learning about the significance of the poppy in WW1.  Learning what it would have been like during The Liverpool Blitz, finding out about the 'Home Front' and women's roles during WW2. We will also be learning about the roles of ARP Wardens and exploring  propaganda.

In Art, we will look at a range of skills and media, foccusing on two wartime artists. We will use a full range of pencils, charcoals or pastels and water colour paints to create a piece of art in the style of artists. We will be inspired by the work of Graham Sutherland and Albert Richards.

In Computing, we will focus on developing our skills using Google Drive. We will become familiar with key elements of Goole Drive including Google Slides. We will be creating our own Google Slides presentation using information we have learnt during Topic lessons.

In SMSC, we will look at the world we live in and our British values of: respect, tolerance, diversity and equality for all. We will develop our understanding of community and look at respecting differences.  We will learn about living in the wider world and play an active role as citizens.

In Music, we will compare and contrast the impact that different composers from different times have had on people of that time. We will also sing in harmony confidently and accurately and perform parts from memory.

In RE, we will be looking at the religion of Christianity. We will become familiar with the life and celebrations of Christians. We will investigate why special buildings and music are important to Christians.

We have P.E. on Mondays and Wednesdays so please ensure your child has their full PE kit in school, (t-shirt, shorts and pumps) all earrings must be removed or covered up. If your child needs a new PE kit, they are available to buy at the school office.

Your child will receive English (SPaG/ Reading or Writing), spellings and Maths homework every Friday.

Maths and English / Spelling homework needs to be returned on Friday.

Children will have a spelling test every Friday.

We expect children to read daily for at least 20 minutes and to continue to learn their times tables.

If you have been absent look below for catch up activities you can do at home!
