Autumn Term 2

In Autumn term 2 , our topic is ‘Toys’. We will be looking at the traditional story tale: ‘Goldilocks and the Three Bears’.  We will be sequencing and then retelling this story. We will then create our own exciting versions of a new Goldilocks story!

We will also be learning about prefixes and suffixes and focusing our attention on the prefix un (and how this changes the meaning of a word) and the suffix ing.

We will have phonics everyday and will read with an adult in our guided reading group once a week.

In Maths, we will be starting the term by looking at subtraction.  We will be learning strategies to subtract in our heads and also new ways to record our calculations on paper.

We will then look at securing our understanding of teens numbers (numbers 11-19) and introducing the idea of place value, so that we understand the value of each digit in a number.

Later in the half term we will investigate and explore the properties of 2D and 3D shapes.

We will do lots of practical maths to help us learn new maths ideas and will be encouraged to use new maths vocabulary that we have been learning to explain how we solve problems.

We always strive to be super independent learners!

Our topic in Autumn 2 is ‘Toys’. We will be comparing present toys to toys from the past looking at ways they may be the same or, in some cases, very different!

We will be inviting Grandparents into school to share toys they used to like playing with when they were little. A date will be organised soon and we hope lots of you can make it!

The children will read at least once a week in their guided reading groups.

Year 1 are encouraged to change their home reading books on a Monday and a Thursday . We have a basket with different coloured books in and the children can choose a new book once they have read it at least 3 times. The 1st time they will be getting to know the book. The 2nd time they will be reading the book with more clarity and beginning to understand it. The 3rd time we encourage parents to use the guided reading questions provided to ask the children about the story as this helps when we come to our half termly assertive mentoring tests :) It is important that the child can not only read the book but also understand what they are reading. We will re-test the children at the end of this half term and this will determine whether your child will change a book band / colour :)

This half term, we will begin to have our spelling tests every Friday. New words will be sent home on a Friday for the children to practice at home.

PE Days

On Monday and Fridays we have P.E.,  so please ensure your child has their full P.E. kit in school, (tshirt, shorts and pumps) all earrings must be removed or covered up. If your child needs a new P.E. kit they are available to buy at the school office.

Dates for your diary:

Monday 18th November 2.45pm - Delamere Meeting

We look forward to each and everyday in Year 1 and hope that all of the children enjoy their time with us as we continue to achieve excellence.

We are on Twitter and the children will be tweeting throughout the day!
