Spring Term 2 - 'Queen Elizabeth ll'

Our topic this term is ‘Queen Elizabeth ll.’  We will begin by introducing the text ‘The Queen’s Hat’ which explores different London landmarks. We will begin by exploring the story sequence and we will then retell it through a Talk for Writing approach. We will then follow this by innovating the story. Look out for our stories on Twitter. Later in the term, we will research different facts about Queen Elizabeth ll and write a non-chronological report. We will continue to have phonics daily and we will read with an adult in our guided reading group once a week.

In Maths, we will continue to develop our knowledge of numbers through to 100. We will begin by looking at the place value of numbers to help us sequence any given numbers to 100. This will help us to also form numbers to 100. We will continue to practice our addition and subtraction strategies to help us be speedy mathematicians! We will continue to do lots of practical maths to help us learn new maths ideas and will be encouraged to use new maths vocabulary that we have been learning to explain how we solve problems.

In science we will begin by exploring different animal groups and the classification of mammals, reptiles, amphibians, birds and insects. I wonder how many animals the children will be able to name?  We will discuss the definitions carnivore, herbivore and omnivore. We will link our knowledge of our human body parts to animal parts and make comparisons.

Our topic for Spring 2 is ‘Queen Elizabeth ll’ where we will link our Geography knowledge from the Spring 1 Term. In history we will begin by discussing what the term ‘Monarch’ means and link this to Queen Elizabeth ll. We will discuss what rules and laws the Queen approves and then create our own. We will create a timeline of key events in the Queen’s life including her Coronation and Jubilee celebrations. We will build upon our Spring 1 geographical knowledge of the United Kingdom by exploring the different houses and palaces where the Queen lives. Finally we will create a ‘Royal Family Tree’ and discuss who will succeed the throne. In art we will use drawing and colour to create Queen Portraits. We will use pastels and different materials to make the portrait look ‘royal.’ In DT we will be hosting a ‘Royal Tea Party’ where the children will design, make and evaluate a cupcake.

The children will read at least once a week in their guided reading groups.

Year 1 are encouraged to change their home reading books on a Monday and a Thursday . We have a basket with different coloured books in and the children can choose a new book once they have read it at least 3 times. The 1st time they will be getting to know the book. The 2nd time they will be reading the book with more clarity and beginning to understand it. The 3rd time we encourage parents to use the guided reading questions provided to ask the children about the story as this helps when we come to our half termly Bench Marking assessment. It is important that the child can not only read the book but also understand what they are reading. We will re-test the children at the end of this half term and this will determine whether your child will change a book band / colour.

This half term, we will begin to have our spelling tests every Friday. New words will be sent home on a Friday for the children to practice at home.

PE Days

On Monday and Fridays we have P.E.,  so please ensure your child has their full P.E. kit in school, (tshirt, shorts and pumps) all earrings must be removed or covered up. If your child needs a new P.E. kit they are available to buy at the school office.

We look forward to each and everyday in Year 1 and hope that all of the children enjoy their time with us as we continue to achieve excellence.

We are on Twitter and the children will be tweeting throughout the day!

Don't forget to follow us.

Thank you

Mrs Boyd and Mrs C
