Spring Term 1

'Off on a UK adventure'

Our topic this term is ‘Off on a UK Adventure.’  We will begin by introducing the text ‘The Gruffalo’ to link with our field trip to Delamere Forest. We will explore the story setting and use adjectives to create a setting description. We will begin to extend our writing by using the conjunctions ‘and’ and ‘because '. Later in the term will be read the story ‘The Queen’s Hat’ where we will explore landmarks of London. We will continue to have phonics daily and we will read with an adult in our guided reading group once a week.

In Maths, we will be starting the term by exploring teen numbers and introducing the concept of place value. This will help us understand the value of each digit in a number. To help us develop mastery of teen numbers we will order and compare teen numbers. We will then use our existing knowledge of addition, subtraction and number bond strategies to solve problems related to teen numbers.

Later in the half term we will investigate and explore length, height, weight and volume.

We will do lots of practical maths to help us learn new maths ideas and will be encouraged to use new maths vocabulary that we have been learning to explain how we solve problems.

Our topic for Spring 1 is ‘Off on a UK adventure.’ We will start by looking at our local area and the human features of Ellesmere Port. We will then compare Ellesmere Port to Delamere Forest and explore the similarities and differences. The children will then begin to explore other areas of the United Kingdom, where we will learn the four countries and the capital cities. In art, we will learn about the life of British artist L.S Lowry and create our own artwork inspired by the painting ‘My Town.’

The children will read at least once a week in their guided reading groups.

Year 1 are encouraged to change their home reading books on a Monday and a Thursday . We have a basket with different coloured books in and the children can choose a new book once they have read it at least 3 times. The 1st time they will be getting to know the book. The 2nd time they will be reading the book with more clarity and beginning to understand it. The 3rd time we encourage parents to use the guided reading questions provided to ask the children about the story as this helps when we come to our half termly assertive mentoring tests :) It is important that the child can not only read the book but also understand what they are reading. We will re-test the children at the end of this half term and this will determine whether your child will change a book band / colour :)

This half term, we will begin to have our spelling tests every Friday. New words will be sent home on a Friday for the children to practice at home.

PE Days

On Monday and Fridays we have P.E.,  so please ensure your child has their full P.E. kit in school, (tshirt, shorts and pumps) all earrings must be removed or covered up. If your child needs a new P.E. kit they are available to buy at the school office.

Dates for your diary:

1B Delamere Visit: Wednesday 15th - Thursday 16th January 2020

1C Delamere Visit: Thursday 16th - Friday 17th January 2020

We look forward to each and everyday in Year 1 and hope that all of the children enjoy their time with us as we continue to achieve excellence.
