My background and track record reflect my unflinching ambition to improve outcomes for all children. Name: Mike Slater

Type of Governor: Co-opted Governor

For the past twelve years most of my teaching activities has been with graduates entering the agricultural industry where they were being prepared to advise farmers on crop production matters. It was so revealing to see the  range of understanding they had on food and it’s production. At an early stage all children would benefit from both access to the natural world and an understanding of the value and source of the foods they eat,

When possible I have facilitated trips for children to see farming and offered facilities for nature study and used to take lambs and calves into schools until it was felt that risks from contact with animals was too great. The great disconnect between especially urban children and the countryside has to be overcome.

My aim as a governor would be to help bring these connections together in simple ways to foster children’s interest for the rest of their school careers. Also to protect their learning environment were possible providing adequate space for them to learn and have fun.
