Summer Term

Moon Landing!
What? Who? When? Where? How?

This half-term our Literacy Book is ‘Look up’ by Nathan Bryan. The children will continue to develop their vocabulary and extended writing. We will consolidate our understanding of using conjunctions and adjectives in our writing to make it more interesting, whilst beginning to apply taught spelling patterns too. We will use question words to understand our new topic ‘Moon Landing!’

We have a 30 minute daily phonics lesson to practise reading and writing our sounds. Each week we will be introduced to a new spelling pattern that we will be encouraged to use in our writing and reading.

We will begin this half-term by exploring fractions and understanding the concept of whole, equal and unequal parts. We will be able to find one half, one quarter and one third of a shape and number before we deepen our understanding by exploring equivalent fractions later this half-term. Children will understand that the denominator shows how many parts a shape is split into. Later this half term we will begin to look at measurement, where we will measure and compare lengths in cm and metres.

We will continue to practise daily our 2, 3, 5 and 10 times table, so remember to keep practising them at home too!

The children will continue to develop their mental math strategies through our arithmetic academy lessons each week.

We have access to Mathletics, which allows the children to practise their number skills at home. The children's login details can be found on the first page of their reading record.

This term in science we will build on our understanding on plants from previous years. We will consolidate our understanding of different parts of a plant, and we will be able to describe the cycle of a plant. Look at our sticky knowledge mat to find out our key vocabulary words. We will explore different conditions for growing a plant by conducting an experiment, ‘Can you grow a plant in space?’

Our topic this half term is ‘Moon Landing!’ We are going to explore the events of 1969 and we are going to research the astronaut who landed on the moon, Neil Armstrong. In DT we are going to design, create and evaluate our own rockets to see if we can fly to the moon too! Look at our sticky knowledge mat to find out our key words!

The children are expected to read at home on a daily basis. Please ask your child questions about what they have read in order to develop their comprehension skills. Please return your child's reading book and reading record on a Monday.
Children's books will be changed on a

Each child has access to Phonics Bug Club. This interactive site allows children to practise their phonics based reading skills. Your child's login can be found on the first page of their reading record.

On Thursdays we have P.E. The children will need to wear trainers on this day to school until further notice.
